Graduate Programs: Funding

Every full-time graduate student is funded

All full-time students in our MSc and PhD programs, in both Physics and Medical Physics, receive financial support. You don't apply for it separately. Your funding is arranged when a supervisor agrees to take you on, and you'll know the details before you submit your formal application.

How much

For students supervised by faculty with a primary appointment in the Department, in either program, we guarantee:

  • at least $2,000 per month take-home on average ($24,000 per year), after tuition; and
  • at least $33,000 per year in total support on average, including the part that covers tuition.

The difference is tuition, which is paid out of your support; the take-home amount is what's left after it. For current tuition rates, see the Faculty of Graduate Studies Tuition and fees page.

International MSc students receive a higher stipend to cover their higher tuition.

Students of our cross-appointed faculty are funded through their supervisor's research program or, in Medical Physics, by arrangement with the Director of Medical Physics.

How long

Support normally lasts two years for an MSc and four years for a PhD. Part-time students are not normally funded.

Where the money comes from

Your support combines several sources, depending on your program and supervisor:

  • scholarships and awards
  • your supervisor's research grants
  • teaching assistantships (paid work helping to teach undergraduate courses)
  • quality assurance assistantships (paid quality assurance work in the clinic)

You don't need to put this package together yourself. Your supervisor and the Department arrange it.

Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science Graduate Scholarship

We offer our own scholarship to new students with an excellent academic record.

  • Value: $20,000 per year, for two years (MSc) or four years (PhD). It forms part of your funding package rather than adding to it.
  • Who is eligible: new students, Canadian or international, entering the Physics or Medical Physics program with a GPA of 3.7 or higher, and supervised or co-supervised by a faculty member with a primary appointment in the Department.
  • How to get it: there's no separate application. If you meet the GPA requirement and your prospective supervisor recommends you, you'll receive it.
  • Moving from MSc to PhD: if you hold the MSc scholarship and transfer to the PhD at the end of your first year, you automatically receive the PhD scholarship for three more years.
  • Other awards: it can't be combined with an award worth more than $20,000 per year, such as a Canada Graduate Research Scholarship or a Killam award.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies lists many more on its Scholarships and Bursaries page, including awards for international students. Deadlines for the national awards come early in the academic year, so start early and work with your prospective supervisor.

Conference travel

Once you're here, you can apply for up to $1,000 to present your research at a conference: a $500 Conference Travel Grant from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, plus a $500 supplement from the Faculty of Science, with a single application.
