For Preceptors


A preceptor is an experienced practitioner who agrees to supervise a student in a clinical setting.  Your role as preceptor is invaluable to the pilipiliÂþ»­ of the Dalhousie School of Health Sciences program. Acting as a preceptor provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and clinical skills while guiding students in their learning.

You can prepare for the arrival of your student by reviewing the School website, reading the course outline, and becoming familiar with the students' learning objectives. You can seek further development of your preceptor skills by reviewing information about Practice Education in the Faculty of Health and by completing the .

The Clinical CoordinatorÌý´Ç°ù Professor of Record are available to provide you with additional support in your role as preceptor.

The preceptor of the year award is granted annually, at the fall recognition reception, to a clinical preceptor who demonstrates a passion for working with students. Students may nominate a preceptor from a clinical practicum or clinical education course in any year of the BHSc program.

Award recipients must meet the following criteria:

  • Has a passion for working with students
  • Generates a positive and collaborative atmosphere
  • Shares knowledge and expertise with colleagues
  • Challenges the student to use their critical thinking skills and problem solving
    abilities
  • Is dedicated to lifelong learning
  • Embodies professional standards
  • Is a role model for students and members of the health care team
