Workplace incivility: From science to solutions

Faculty of Management Research Talk

With Dr. Lilia Cortina, University of Michigan

Hostile work behavior ranges from subtle social slights to general incivility to blatant harassment and violence. But more often than not, workplace abuse is insidious: seemingly "small" acts of disrespect accumulate over time to erode employee health. In this talk, Dr Cortina will highlight findings from research on workplace incivility, referring to organizational behavior that is rude but subdued, with an ambiguous intent to harm. She will demonstrate how incivility can interfere with work and wellbeing, among not only targets of incivility but also those around them (e.g., witnesses, workgroups, families). She will also show how gender and race are relevant to this seemingly identity-neutral behavior. This talk will conclude with a brainstorming session, where she will engage audience members to generate ideas for how to address these everyday assaults on human dignity.
