Interprofessional Health Education (IPE)

Healthcare can be complex and involve many different professionals from varying backgrounds. Interprofessional collaborative practice is necessary to provide person-centered care that addresses a person’s/family’s needs without duplicating some services and letting others slip through the cracks. According to the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC), "healthcare providers who are good, interprofessional collaborative practitioners understand the importance of working together with colleagues and the patient/family.” Interprofessional practice improves safety, and outcomes for patients/clients/families and improves satisfaction and decreases stress for health professionals.
Interprofessional health education (IPHE) aims to prepare professionals for interprofessional collaborative practice. According to the World Health Organization, IPHE is when “students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.” During their studies, audiology and speech-language pathology students will participate in interprofessional collaborative learning experiences. Some IPHE experiences are required, either within the Faculty of Health or embedded in SCSD courses, while other experiences are optional. Below you will find a list of the requirements for IPHE 5900 and tabs that list possible IPHE activities.
