How to Apply
You must apply to our graduate programs online through the . Application information (including information on the submission of electronic references) is available there. Please note:Ìýthree references are required by the Department of History.
Candidates for the MA program must hold a four-year BA, or a general BA in history. Honours is preferred but not required, as long as applicants can demonstrate experience with longer-form research projects.
Candidates for the PhD program must have a MA degree in history.
In addition toÌýthe application and the application fee that are submitted via Dalonline, the following supporting documents should be uploaded to the application portal:
- One writing sample, ideally a major paper you have completed
- For MA applications: approximately 15 pages
- For PhD Applications: approximately 30 pagesÌý Ìý Ìý ÌýÌý
- A Statement of Interest
- °Õ°ù²¹²Ô²õ³¦°ù¾±±è³Ù²õÌý
- Upload PDFs of the transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended.Ìý
- You may submit unofficial transcripts for GPA consideration, with official transcripts required once an admission offer is made.
- Dalhousie and King's students may submit unofficial transcripts from those schools. Official transcripts from Dal and King's are not required at any stage.
- English Competency Score
- If the language of instruction at your previous university was not English, you must submit scores from a recognized English language test

Deadlines for 2026/2027 graduate admissions are as follows:Ìý
- To be considered for funding: January 15, 2026
- International applications: April 1, 2026
- Canadian applicants: June 1, 2026

Funding
All students who apply to our program by January 15 will be considered for the following scholarships:
- Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarships (MA or PhD);Ìý
- Dalhousie Research Excellence Scholarships (PhD);Ìý
- Dalhousie 1-year Master’s Scholarships (MA);Ìý
- and Killam Doctoral Scholarships (PhD).Ìý
Please see the Faculty of Graduate Studies scholarship webpage for more information (e.g. eligibility, value) on these awards. There is no separate application required to be considered for these awards.Ìý
Students applying to our Master’s program are strongly encouraged to apply to the (CGRS-M deadline: December 1st, 2025). Only students who have applied for the SSHRC CGRSM via the SSHRC portal will be considered for that award.Ìý
Students planning to apply to the History doctoral program must apply to the if they are eligible. This award is not managed by Dalhousie. Please see the SSHRC guidelines for eligibility for international students. (CGRS-D deadline: October 17th, 2025)
