What we do and who we are
The Dalhousie Undergraduate History Society (UGHS) is a student society that meets weekly during the fall and winter semesters. The society serves as a venue where history students and history buffs alikeĢżmeet and discuss interests they have in common.ĢżNew members are always welcome at any point in the academic year.
The Dalhousie Undergraduate History Society also leads events for the student community including, but not limited to, trivia nights, historical trips in and around Halifax, and our annual road trip. The Dalhousie Undergraduate History Society also produces Pangaea, our annual undergraduate journal that publishes student-authored work.

President: Harry Pressman
Hi there, Iām Harry, your president for the UGHS! Iām pursuing a major in history with a dual minor in classics and anthropology. My areas of interest are ancient (particularly Bronze Age) Greece, and more thematically play and fantasy. This is my third year on the exec and my first as president and I look forward to meeting new faces and sharing all the amazing programming we have to offer this year!
Vice President: Callie Jurmain
Hey!! My name is Callie and Iām so excited to be the UGHS vice president this year! Iām currently in my fourth year of a combined honours in Contemporary Studies and History. In history, Iām typically drawn to the contemporary period. I especially enjoy examining the history of punishment and moral panics which have caused correlated spikes in carceral ātough on crimeā approaches.
Treasurer: Emmett Stevenson
Hello! My nameās Emmett, your treasurer for the UGHS! Iām in my third year of studies at pilipiliĀž» double majoring in International Development Studies and Classics, with a minor in History. Iām especially interested in classical period architecture, trade, infrastructure, and culture, as well as theology. In my free time I love to run and hike, camp, generally learn about any topic I find fascinating, run arctic events, and I also love coffee! Secretary: Isabella Gualtieri
Hi, Iām Bella (she/her)! Iām double majoring in History and Political Science, and Iām thrilled to be your secretary! Iām particularly interested in Russian history at the turn of the 20th century, though Iāll fall down a Google rabbit hole for pretty much anything history-related. Outside of academics, Iām an avid reader, music lover, triathlete, and you can usually find me wandering downtown Halifax in search of new coffee shops. Social Media and Outreach Coordinator: Rebecca Merner
Hi! My name is Rebecca and Iām the social media and outreach coordinator for the UGHS. I am in my fourth year at Dal pursuing an Honours degree in History with a minor in Classics. Iām writing my honours thesis on art history, more specifically on indigenous artists contributing to the Cusco School of Art in early modern colonial Peru. In my free time you can find me in the back corner of a coffee shop, drinking a latte and reading a fantasy novel. The UGHS Instagram is my domain this year! Senior Year Representative: Teymour Sarwar
Hello everyone! Iām Teymour, a fourth-year representative for Dalās very own Undergraduate History Society. True to the title, I am in my fourth year, double-majoring in History and International Development Studies. My majors have led me to a particular interest in colonial history, politics and their intersections with the development field. My passions are travel, cooking, and I love having conversations about history, current events, or anything else! UGHS has lots of events to offer. I hope to see you around!
Third Year Representative: Katie Sievenpiper
Hi! Iām Katie and Iām in my third year of a major in History with a certificate in Indigenous Studies. I love studying Medieval and Early Modern history, with a lens on women and law. This fall Iāll be pursuing that interest at Oxford on an exchange, but Iāll be back in Halifax for the winter! During the school year I can usually be found locking-in at a coffee shop, but in my spare time I love reading, crocheting and coaching ski racing! My name is Jonathan, Iām from Nova Scotia and Iām the second year representative for the history society. Right now Iām majoring in Classics and not really doing much else. Iām always up to talk history and get philosophical! In my spare time I enjoy reading, hiking, and rowing. Iām super excited to work with you all this year!

Hi, my name is Logan! Iām so excited to be the first year representative for the history society! My favourite parts of history to study are the scientific revolution and the cold war era. Hello! Iām Bella and Iām your Kingās rep. Iām a third year History and EMSP student focusing on Art History. Hi everyone, my names Taya!! Iām a 3rd year DAL student who majors in history and minors in classics. I have a fascination with medieval European history as well as classical antiquity. When I'm not drowning in assignments I fill my days interacting with niche online content (ex. An introspective YouTube video on a book Iāve never and will never read.)
