2026 Smith Shield Moot: N.S. v Canada (Attorney General)

The Smith Shield Moot is a not-for-credit exhibition that sees two teams of two student advocates argue a hypothetical appeal before a panel of lawyers, judges, and members of the Weldon community.

It is the premiere mooting event of the academic calendar with a tradition dating back to 1927 and being selected to participate is a significant accolade.

Horace E. Read Memorial Lecture: Let Us Not Look Away Again – Building Community Safety Through Justice Transformation

About the Lecture:

The Read Lecture series was inaugurated in 1975 to honour the memory of the late Horace E Read, OC, QC, Dean of Dalhousie Law School from 1950-1964, in recognition of his contribution to legal education and legal scholarship.

Dr. Read's areas of interest were broad: law reform, legislation and the legislative process, conflict of law, labour law and legal education, and this is well reflected in the diversity of the lectures.

About the Speaker and Topic:

Kim Stanton, BA (Hon), LLB, LLM, SJD, is a lawyer, author, and senior fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto.

As one of the three commissioners selected to conduct the Mass Casualty Commission, her lecture will connect findings from this Nova Scotia public inquiry to those of her 2025 report on the British Columbia legal system's treatment of survivors of gender-based violence, providing a roadmap for breaking the cycle of decades of repeated, unimplemented recommendations in order to offer pathways to safety and justice.

F.B. Wickwire Memorial Lecture: Criticizing Trump Administration Lawyers

This year’s F.B. Wickwire Memorial Lecture in Professional Responsibility and Legal Ethics will be given by W. Bradley Wendel, Edwin H. Woodruff Professor of Law at Cornell Law School.

About the Topic:

Lawyers generally believe in something called the Principle of Nonaccountability, which shields them from criticism for representing unpopular clients. Lawyers also have a stock of explanations or excuses they can offer for choosing to represent such clients: for example, the principle that everybody deserves as lawyer, or the importance of providing a vigorous defense to a criminal accused. But waving off criticism in this peremptory way prematurely ends a conversation that would be beneficial in a democracy that values relationships of accountability between professions and the political community.

In his recent book, Canceling Lawyers, Wendel argued against the Principle of Nonaccountability, saying that the point is not that lawyers are wrongdoers as a matter of identification with their clients, but that lawyers do owe an account that justifies the representation. Importantly, this account must acknowledge that lawyers remain moral agents when acting within their professional role.

Using examples from the second Trump administration, Wendel will discuss what moral accountability would look like for government lawyers involved in implementing these policies.
