Dalhousie Law Hour, in collaboration with the Criminal Justice Coalition, the Dalhousie Criminal Law Student Association (DCLSA), and the Dalhousie Prison Justice Society (DPJS), is pleased to welcome the first Law Hour lecturer of the winter semester, Erin Nauss.

Nauss is the director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for the police in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and will speak about accountability in practice, SiRT's role in it, and how the organization interfaces with the legal profession. She has been practising law for 19 years, having previously held various leadership and management positions with the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.

What is SiRT?

The Serious Incident Response Team is a police oversight agency responsible for conducting investigations into incidents that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or any matter of public interest that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. The Chiefs of all municipal police agencies and the heads of the RCMP, in both provinces, are required by law to refer all serious incidents to SiRT.

Douglas M. Johnston Lecture: Lived Experience and Climate Justice – Reframing Priorities

The Marine & Environmental Law Institute at the Schulich School of Law invites you to the 17th annual Douglas M. Johnston Lecture "Lived Experience and Climate Justice – Reframing Priorities" with guest speaker Elisa Morgera, the United Nations special rapporteur on climate change.

About the Topic:

International human rights processes have not only clarified applicable obligations and standards for States and business to protect human rights in the context of climate change to ensure climate justice, they have also brought together a body of evidence based on the lived experiences and insights of the human rights holders most affected by climate change and certain climate solutions.

This evidence sheds a new light on the root causes of climate change and other planetary crises, notably growing economic inequality. This in turn serves to understand which interventions should be prioritized and to question, constructively, which decision-making processes need reform to be better able to address root causes and advance priority actions.

About the Speaker:

Elisa Morgera is the United Nations special rapporteur on climate change. She is also a professor of international law and sustainability at Durham University and a professor of international and EU environmental law at the University of Eastern Finland.

Join Schulich Law Associate Professor Andrew Flavelle Martin for the launch of his book Legal Ethics and the Attorney General – A Canadian Analysis.

About the Book:

In the Canadian context, the Attorney General plays a unique and complex role. They practice law as the Chief Law Officer of the Crown but their unique role poses special challenges for regulation by the law society and for broader accountability.

This book explores how legal ethics applies to the Attorney General as a lawyer, legislator, and member of Cabinet. It focuses on the constitutional and legal factors that make accountability complicated and intriguing.

The Schulich School of Law cordially invites all members of the Dalhousie community to a special event with the 2025 CBC Massey Lecturer Alex Neve, O.C. (LLB '87).

About the Lecture:

Our lives are surrounded by a deepening climate crisis, the toll of genocide and mass atrocities, and the rapid rise of hate and divisiveness. Unquestionably, there is an urgent need to renew and strengthen the vital promise of universal human rights in our communities and across the world.

Neve's 2025 CBC Massey Lectures "Universal: Renewing Human Rights in a Fractured World" explore that imperative, lifting up the vital role of 'people power' and solidarity at this crucial time.

In this talk, Neve will offer an overview of his five Massey Lectures, including the fractured state of our world and a hopeful way forward.

He will then be joined by a panel of community members to reflect on what universality means in their human rights work and studies, including:

Following the lecture, Neve will be signing copies of his new book UNIVERSAL: Renewing Human Rights in a Fractured World.

Neve is a visiting and adjunct professor in international human rights law at the Schulich School of Law and the University of Ottawa, and is a senior fellow with the University of Ottawa’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. He has taken part in over 40 human rights research and advocacy delegations throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, Guantánamo Bay, and First Nations communities in Canada and served as Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada from 2000–2020.
