Research Interests
Dr. Bishop's principal area of research is metal additive manufacturing (AM) of copper, nickel, titanium, ferrous, and aluminum alloys. Here, he conducts applied research on powder manufacture (gas atomization), process optimization for multiple printing modalities (laser powder bed fusion, laser directed energy deposition, binder jet printing), post-build heat treatments, and the transfer of outcomes to a broad scope of supporting industry partners.  Printed products are subjected to detailed characterization work that includes microstructure assessment, mechanical testing, corrosion testing, residual stress measurements, and physical property measurements.
