Insects in the digital age

In 1987, world-renowned ecologist E.O. Wilson famously described insects as “the little things that run the world”. While this holds true nearly 40 years later, much has changed with what we know about insects, and the tools we use to study them. This talk will begin by explore some of the important ways that insects shape our world. Next, we’ll look at how new digital tools are changing the way we observe and understand insects, and how community science platforms like iNaturalist are allowing people everywhere to contribute observations that can have various important uses to a global community of scientists, policy-makers, and nature-enthusiasts. Finally, I’ll share some of the work from my lab, the Insect Biodiversity in Agroecosystems Lab, and show how these new tools and approaches have helped us develop research questions, collect new kinds of data, and better understand the insects that we share our planet with.

Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame

Every October the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame celebrates the contributions made by four individuals to the agriculture industry in Atlantic Canada. Producers, innovators, volunteers, scientists, and business professionals are lauded for their role in shaping and influencing agriculture, the impact of their contributions being felt regionally, nationally and internationally. We look forward to celebrating four more deserving individuals this year.

College Royal celebrates the long-standing tradition of agricultural showmanship while celebrating the unique culture of the campus.

Demonstrations include livestock handling skills, knowledge of agricultural plants and the ever-popular Farmers' Olympics.

The event is a testament to generations of students, dedicated to maintaining the culture of animal-husbandry and health, while continuing to improve public awareness of agricultural issues.

Head to the campus farm to watch students, staff and faculty compete.

Community Scholar Series: Drs. Szymon Parzniewski and Parth Bansal

Dr. Szymon Parzniewski is a Postdoctoral researcher based at the BaCoR Lab (School of Social Work). His work examines how communities, public agencies, service providers collaborate before, during, and after disasters.

Title: Mapping Community Assets for Disaster Resilience: Lessons from HRM and CBRM

This informal seminar will introduce community asset mapping and share experiences from the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM).

It will explore how identifying local knowledge, social networks, organisations, services, infrastructure, communication systems, and natural resources can strengthen disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The presentation will consider how these lessons may be applied across different sectors, with brief examples relevant to agriculture and rural communities.

Dr. Parth Bansal is a Postdoctoral fellow at School of Social Work, pilipili��. His research interests are at the intersection of geography, disaster and wellbeing sciences.

Title: Power Outages, Well-Being, and Community Resilience: Lessons from Rural and Urban Nova Scotia

This informal seminar will explore how power outages affect well-being and how their impacts can differ across rural and urban communities in Nova Scotia.

It will consider how outage duration and remoteness shape community resilience. The presentation will connect these findings with community asset mapping by considering how local infrastructure, services, social support, communication systems, and alternative resources can help communities prepare for and manage prolonged disruptions.
