Before You Go
Dalhousie students, faculty, and staff are all subject to Dalhousie’s International Travel Policy when participating in university activities that involve travel outside of Canada.
For students, there are different steps and requirements that must be completed before your international travel begins. The information on this page helps to explain those steps and requirements. You must:
- Complete an emergency contact form.
- Download the International SOS app and register your trip itinerary.
- Purchase international travel and health insurance coverage through the DSU.
- Complete a series of pre-departure modules on Brightspace.
All information should be submitted to the International Centre before the start of your travel. International Centre staff will review the information and then email you to confirm if you have met the policy’s requirements for international travel. Please allow at least two weeks to complete the above steps and requirements, and for the International Centre to review and confirm your travel preparations.
Failure to complete the above steps and requirements can result in de-registration, forfeit of academic credit, and/or ineligibility for university funding.
It is optional but recommended to complete the International Travel Risk Assessment & Safety Plan as a self-directed exercise when travelling to a Level 1 (“Take Normal Security Precautions”) or Level 2 (“Exercise a High Degree of Caution”) destination, as per the .
The University does not normally permit travel to Level 3 (“Avoid Non-Essential Travel”) or Level 4 (“Avoid All Travel”) destinations. Please check the International Travel Policy or contact the International Centre for more information about travel to these destinations.
